Follow-Me Lighting Scenario Applications with ZigBee

The Follow-Me Lighting Concept

In large spaces like warehouses, car parks and industrial plants, fixed lighting cannot follow people and vehicles as they move. The follow-me lighting concept solves this: the lighting system keeps the area in front of and behind people or vehicles well-lit at all times, automatically switching zones on and off as needed.

Why ZigBee for Follow-Me Lighting

Worldhand’s follow-me solution runs on the ZigBee 3.0 mesh network:

  • Self-healing mesh: every fixture is a node, so light follows reliably across large areas.
  • Custom zone control: adjusts the distance of illumination in front based on the actual scene.
  • AES128 + 16 channels: secure, interference-free communication.
  • MQTT: integrates with building or site management systems.

How Follow-Me Lighting Works

As a person or vehicle moves, the lighting system brightens the zone ahead and behind, and dims zones left behind. It can be customized to adjust the lighting brightness for occupied and unoccupied states, and the forward illumination distance per site. This creates a “bubble” of light that follows movement, so spaces are lit exactly where and when needed.

Electrical Energy and Carbon Emissions Savings

Because light only follows movement instead of lighting the whole area constantly, follow-me control delivers some of the highest energy savings of any smart lighting strategy. The environmental benefit is real: 1 kWh of electricity equals roughly 0.997 kg of CO2 avoided.

Recommended Product

Frequently Asked Questions

What is follow-me lighting?

Follow-me lighting brightens the fixtures ahead of a moving person or vehicle and dims the ones behind, using occupancy or motion sensing combined with ZigBee mesh logic. Only the occupied part of the space is lit at full output.

Where is follow-me lighting normally used?

It suits warehouses, distribution centres, car parks, factory corridors and tunnels during low-traffic hours, where lighting a whole aisle or bore at full output would be wasteful.

How much energy does follow-me lighting save?

Typically 60-80% compared with always-on lighting in the same space, because full output is limited to the zone being used. The saving is largest in long, linear spaces such as aisles, conveyor lines and tunnels.
