Office Smart Lighting Application with ZigBee

The Office Lighting Challenge

Offices are typically lit at a fixed brightness from open to close, even when many areas are empty or already bright from daylight. ZigBee smart lighting adapts to real occupancy and natural light, keeping workers comfortable while eliminating unnecessary energy use.

Why ZigBee for Office Smart Lighting

Worldhand’s office solution runs on the ZigBee 3.0 mesh network:

  • Self-healing mesh: fixtures remain connected and controllable across whole floors.
  • Microwave motion & constant-illumination sensors: detect presence and maintain target light levels.
  • AES128 + 16 channels: secure, interference-free control.
  • MQTT: integrates with building management and energy platforms.

How Smart Lighting Works in an Office

In a lighting group, when any sensor detects the movement of people, the brightness of the group automatically adjusts to 100%. When the sensors no longer detect movement, the group dims to a standby level, following the energy-saving power curve 100% → 30% → 5%. Constant-illumination sensors maintain a comfortable target level using only the energy actually needed.

Electrical Energy and Carbon Emissions Savings

Because office lighting follows occupancy and daylight, sensor-based control delivers large energy savings. And the impact adds up: 1 kWh of electricity equals roughly 0.997 kg of CO2 avoided. Across a large office or campus, that translates into real cost savings and a meaningful reduction in carbon footprint.

Frequently Asked Questions

What illuminance should an office lighting scheme deliver?

Around 300 lux for general office work and up to 500 lux where detailed tasks or paper documents are handled, as set out in EN 12464-1. Daylight harvesting keeps these levels constant while reducing artificial light whenever daylight is sufficient.

Will wireless dimming cause flicker or colour shift in an office?

No. Worldhand smart luminaires use constant-current drivers with smooth 1-100% dimming and no visible flicker, and colour temperature stays stable across the dimming range, which matters for screens and video calls.

How does smart office lighting support ESG and carbon reporting?

The gateway logs energy per zone and per scene, so measured kWh can be converted directly into carbon figures using the 0.997 kg CO2 per kWh factor. That gives auditable data for annual sustainability or customer ESG reporting.
