The High-Speed Rail Platform Challenge
High-speed rail platforms must be safely lit day and night, but full-power lighting wastes energy during bright daylight hours and when platforms are empty. ZigBee smart lighting balances safety and efficiency by automatically adapting brightness to natural light and train schedules.

Why ZigBee for High-Speed Rail Platforms
Built on the ZigBee 3.0 mesh network, Worldhand’s solution is reliable and scalable:
- Self-healing mesh: fixtures keep working as a connected group even if a node fails.
- Daylight & infrared sensors: monitor sunlight and occupancy in real time.
- AES128 + 16 channels: secure, interference-free communication.
- MQTT: integrates with station management and energy systems.
How Smart Lighting Works on a High-Speed Rail Platform
During the day the system uses natural sunlight as much as possible, with lighting providing supplementary illumination. An infrared illuminance sensor monitors sunlight intensity in real time and dynamically adjusts fixture brightness. Lights automatically turn on as it gets darker, and platform lighting adjusts automatically based on train arrivals and departures.

Electrical Energy and Carbon Emissions Savings
Daylight harvesting plus occupancy-based control dramatically reduces lighting energy on long platforms. Every kWh saved is meaningful: 1 kWh of electricity equals about 0.997 kg of CO2 avoided. Over a full year of operations, this delivers substantial electricity savings and a lower carbon footprint.

Frequently Asked Questions
What illuminance is required on a high-speed rail platform?
Platforms are generally designed at 150-200 lux with good vertical illuminance for face recognition and CCTV. A ZigBee system can hold a lower standby level overnight and lift to full output before each train arrival.
Can platform lighting be linked to the station management system?
Yes. ZigBee gateways expose the lighting data over MQTT or a REST API, so timetable events, BMS or SCADA systems can trigger scenes and collect energy data per platform or per zone.
How is maintenance handled on a live platform?
Wireless commissioning means no cable tracing, and each fixture reports its status to the gateway. Faulty drivers are identified by address before staff go on site, which shortens night-time access windows.
