High Mast Lighting Design: Pole Height, Spacing & Lux Guidelines

High mast lighting design is the discipline of illuminating very large outdoor areas โ€” ports, airport aprons, container yards and city squares โ€” from a small number of very tall poles. One 20โ€“40m mast fitted with a ring of LED floodlights can replace a forest of low poles, delivering uniform illumination, fewer shadows and far simpler site logistics. This guide covers when high mast lighting earns its cost, how to select high mast pole height, how to plan high mast flood light spacing, and how to calculate the number of fixtures per ring.

When High Mast Lighting Pays Off

High mast lighting design is justified wherever a large, open area needs even illumination and a clean, pole-free environment:

  • Ports, container terminals and intermodal yards โ€” 20โ€“50 lux across large operational zones
  • Airport aprons, taxiways and general aviation ramps
  • Highway interchanges, toll plazas and large roundabouts
  • City squares, plazas and public event spaces
  • Railway marshaling yards, mines and industrial compounds

Because each mast covers thousands of square meters, high mast lighting also cuts pole count, cabling, maintenance access points and stray light compared with low-mast alternatives.

Choosing High Mast Pole Height: 20m to 40m

High mast pole height is the first parameter in any design because it drives coverage area, glare control and cost. Typical heights and their sweet spots:

Pole Height Typical Applications Approx. Coverage per Mast
20m Distribution yards, small interchanges, training grounds 5,000โ€“8,000 mยฒ
25m Medium ports, toll plazas, large roundabouts 7,000โ€“11,000 mยฒ
30m Major ports, airport aprons, large interchanges 10,000โ€“15,000 mยฒ
40m Very large container terminals, airport cargo aprons 18,000โ€“25,000 mยฒ

As a rule of thumb, higher masts reduce the number of poles and driver glare, but they increase wind loading, foundation cost and maintenance complexity. Most projects settle on 25โ€“30m as the practical optimum.

High Mast Flood Light Spacing Guidelines

High mast flood light spacing between poles is usually expressed as a multiple of mounting height โ€” typically 3 to 5 times. At 30m, that means poles spaced roughly 90โ€“150m apart. Tighter spacing (3ร—) favors uniformity and allows lower fixture output; wider spacing (5ร—) minimizes cost but demands more careful aiming and higher-wattage floodlights. Whatever the spacing, aim for a uniformity ratio (average to minimum) of at least 3:1 in working areas, and remember that perimeter zones can be lit at reduced levels.

Calculating the Number of Fixtures per Ring

Fixtures are arranged in rings around the mast top. A common layout is a lower ring of 6โ€“8 floodlights angled to cover the area near the pole, plus an upper ring of 6โ€“12 fixtures for the far field. The number of LED flood lights per mast comes from the standard lumen method:

N = (E ร— A) รท (ฮฆ ร— UF ร— MF)

where E is the target illuminance in lux, A is the lit area in mยฒ, ฮฆ is the lumen output per floodlight, UF is the utilization factor (0.5โ€“0.7) and MF is the maintenance factor (0.7โ€“0.8). Example: 12,000 mยฒ at 40 lux with 60,000 lm floodlights, UF of 0.6 and MF of 0.75 gives N = (40 ร— 12,000) รท (60,000 ร— 0.6 ร— 0.75) = 480,000 รท 27,000 โ‰ˆ 18 fixtures โ€” for instance a 7-fixture lower ring and an 11-fixture upper ring. Reference targets: container terminals and ports 20โ€“50 lux, airport aprons 20โ€“30 lux, public plazas 20โ€“30 lux, security-only areas 10โ€“20 lux.

Maintenance: Lantern Lowering Systems

At 20m and above, safe maintenance is impossible with ladders or cherry pickers alone. A lantern lowering system (LLS) lets the whole ring of floodlights winch down to ground level for cleaning, inspection and replacement, cutting service time from a full day to under an hour and eliminating climbing and confined-space risks. It also matters for LED design life: with TM-21-rated modules such as those in Worldhand’s FL2C and FLS series LED stadium lights, maintenance intervals stretch to years, so the lowering system is used rarely but pays for itself the first time it is needed.

FAQ

What is the standard high mast pole height?

High mast poles range from 20m to 40m; 25โ€“30m is the most common choice for ports, airports and interchanges, balancing coverage, cost and maintenance.

How many flood lights do you need on a high mast?

Typically 12โ€“24 fixtures arranged in two rings. The exact count comes from the lumen formula N = (E ร— A) รท (ฮฆ ร— UF ร— MF) using your target lux, lit area and fixture lumens.

What is the recommended high mast flood light spacing?

Space masts 3 to 5 times the mounting height โ€” for example 90โ€“150m for 30m poles โ€” and verify uniformity (average/minimum โ‰ฅ 3:1) with a photometric calculation.

Do high masts need a lantern lowering system?

Recommended for any pole above 20m and required in many jurisdictions, because it makes maintenance safe, fast and economical.
